Diagram library
A growing collection of S30 wiring diagrams, redrawn from the Nissan Factory Service Manual in a clean, mobile-friendly format. Every diagram is SVG — searchable, scalable to any size, color-coded, and accessible on a phone in a parking lot.
This library is being built incrementally — each new subsystem page adds diagrams here, and we're working backward to give every model year its own complete coverage. The matrix below shows where each year-and-system combination currently sits. Found a mistake or want to suggest priorities? Drop us a note — corrections matter more than speed.
How this library works
The S30 chassis was produced for nine model years (1969–1978) across three engine designations (240Z, 260Z, 280Z) and several major variants (2+2 from 1974, federal/California emissions from 1972, JDM L20-spec from inception). The wiring varies significantly between years — see year-by-year differences for the full breakdown.
A diagram in this library can be at one of three levels of detail:
- Summarized (★) — clean schematic showing the logic of a circuit, useful for understanding how a system works. Roughly equivalent to the kind of diagrams in good aftermarket repair guides. Most existing diagrams on this site are at this level.
- FSM-equivalent (★★) — every wire, every connector, every junction shown to the same level of detail as the original FSM page. Suitable for tracing a specific circuit during a rebuild or diagnosis.
- Annotated (★★★) — FSM-equivalent plus annotations: known failure points, modification options, color callouts that aren't in the original. The eventual target for every common subsystem.
The coverage matrix below shows the current level for each year × subsystem combination. The goal is FSM-equivalent (★★) coverage for every cell within the next year, then annotation work after that.

Power & charging
- Charging system — alternator, voltage regulator, fusible links. Shows external-regulator (240Z/early 260Z) and internal-regulator (late 260Z/280Z) configurations side by side.
- Fuse box layout — fuse positions, ratings, and circuit groupings per year.
- Ground point map — every chassis ground location, what's connected to each, and the standard refresh procedure.
Ignition & starting
- Points-style ignition — coil, ballast, distributor for 1969–1976 with breaker points.
- Transistorized ignition — 1977–78 280Z electronic ignition.
- Starter circuit — battery, solenoid, neutral safety / clutch interlock variations.
EFI (280Z only)
- L-Jetronic EFI overview — ECU, AFM, injectors, cold-start valve, thermotime switch, AAR, EFI relay.
Lighting
- Headlight circuit — high/low beam, dimmer switch, indicator. Includes the relay-upgrade variant.
- Tail / brake / turn — combined rear circuit with shared bulbs, hazard flasher path.
Gauges & instruments
- Instrument cluster wiring — voltage regulator, fuel sender, temp sender, oil pressure, tach.
- Current-loop vs voltage tach — the early-vs-late wiring difference that bites swap-builders.
Accessories
- Wipers & washer — motor, switch, intermittent (where equipped).
- Heater blower — switch, resistor pack, motor.
- Rear defogger — 260Z+ where equipped, with timer relay.
- Horn circuit — relay, button, twin-horn arrangement.
Big picture
- Master harness map — previously on the full-rebuild draft, currently under review and not linked from site navigation
- Year-by-year differences matrix — every electrical change between 1969 and 1978.
- Wire color code reference — FSM color/tracer notation translated to common automotive wire suppliers.
Recreation roadmap
What's coming, in priority order. Priorities reflect "what's most useful for the most owners" — feel free to push back if your need is different.
Next up — high priority
- 280Z (1976) master harness, FSM-equivalent — the most-owned variant, currently only at summarized level.
- Per-year fuse box layouts — exact fuse position numbers and circuit names for each year, so people can find a fuse without paging through 80 PDF pages.
- EFI ECU pinout (280Z) — the L-Jetronic ECU connector with each pin labeled and color-coded. Critical for any EFI diagnosis or swap.
- 240Z (1972) master harness, FSM-equivalent — the second most common starting point for restorations.
Medium term
- Per-year cluster connector pinouts (3 main types across the run).
- Firewall bulkhead connector pinouts (changes between early/late 240Z, 260Z, 280Z).
- Headlight relay upgrade — formal "before/after" diagrams.
- Original-vs-upgraded fusible link layouts.
Longer term
- Annotated (★★★) versions of every existing diagram, with known failure points and common modifications marked inline.
- JDM-spec (Fairlady Z) wiring differences from USDM where they affect drivers in Europe / other RHD markets.
- Engine-swap reference diagrams: L28ET, RB swap, LS swap, KA-T — common modern conversions and how they change the harness.
Attribution & copyright
Every diagram on this site is hand-drawn SVG, not a scan or trace of an FSM page. We use the FSM as a reference for circuit topology, pinouts, and component labels — facts about how the car was built, which aren't copyrightable. The drawings, layouts, color choices, and explanations are original.
We follow the same approach AtlanticZ.ca and other long-established Z resources have followed for 25+ years. If you're a copyright holder and have concerns about something specific on this site, please contact us directly.
For the original FSM scans (which we deliberately do not host), free PDFs circulate on community archives — current links are typically pinned or referenced in active forum threads on classiczcars.com.
Contributing & corrections
These cars are 50+ years old and the community knows them better than any one source. If you spot:
- A wire color that doesn't match your real car's harness
- A connector pinout that's mirrored, rotated, or wrong
- A model-year-specific variation we've missed
- A subsystem you'd like prioritized
please use the contact form. Include the page, the specific issue, and (if you have them) FSM page references or photos. Corrections are typically deployed within a day.
